About alittlecoy - an introduction to my creative practice.

alittlecoy is the creation of maker and artist Jayde McDonald.

Now based in Melbourne, I grew up in regional Victoria, where a deep connection to the country, nature, and hands-on creating became part of who I am. Those early years surrounded by bushland and wide open spaces still guide the way I design today—slowly, thoughtfully, and always with respect for the environment.

I’ve always been drawn to craft. Sewing, jewellery making, and experimenting with materials have been a constant thread in my life, alongside a love for art, texture, colour, and design. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when alittlecoy began. Jewellery making had long been a personal hobby before it ever became a brand. More than ten years ago, I started selling at craft markets around Melbourne, back when the now-iconic Rose St Market in Fitzroy was just taking shape and the Northcote Social Club bandroom was the perfect place to spend a Sunday—beer in hand, surrounded by fellow creatives selling their wares.

After years of being self-taught, I chose to formally study design to extend my skills, explore new mediums, and bring more structure to my creative practice. This step opened up a world of possibilities, allowing me to expand from individual handmade pieces into uniquely designed product ranges.

My slow, organic development as a maker—and my upbringing in the Australian bush—have shaped my approach to sustainability. Every piece I create is designed with its full lifecycle in mind. Supporting Australian small businesses, collaborating with other creatives, and reducing environmental impact are at the centre of my work. Conservation and mindful making aren’t an afterthought; they’re part of the foundation of alittlecoy.

Today, all alittlecoy products are intentionally produced on a small scale, with a strong commitment to sustainable practices and thoughtful, original design. Each piece reflects where I’ve come from, what I value, and the joy I find in creating.
